Book Review: The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo

the Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo' Review: Why TikTok Loves It

Reading slumps during the final months of school can be hard to get out of when summer starts, but if you’re looking to avoid the slump altogether The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo is the way to go. Starting in the present day, the protagonist Monique is a writer in New York for a big magazine company. She thought she went unnoticed until film icon and legend Evelyn Hugo contacted Monique through her magazine to write an article about Evelyn for the first time in decades. Once Monique meets with Evelyn she quickly finds out the article is not for her magazine, nor is it just an article, instead, Evelyn Hugo wants Monique to write her biography about her infamous life and the highly sought-after truth of her Seven Husbands. Soon enough the story follows Evelyn’s seemingly perfect Hollywood red-carpet lifestyle and husband-by-husband shows the good, bad, and ugly of her lavish life.

Having read this over spring break, I wanted an easy read that didn’t cause too much thinking or complexity. I expected to pick this book up and read a few chapters here and there, but I soon found out that wouldn’t be the case when I couldn’t put the book down. The author, Taylor Jenkin Reid slaps you in the face with scandal after scandal and too many twists to count on a hand which might make you think it’s cheap shock factor writing but that is too far from the truth. Reid’s writing is smooth and easy and perfect for a summer day or slow-moving night. I haven’t been able to stop thinking about every factor of this story since putting it down so I can simply not recommend it enough.
