The most common thing for an SCDS student to do when they walk into school is to find friends. Preferably friends who share the same first period class as you. For every grade this can be different. In most cases, for seniors, you find your classmates/friends in the parking lot. If not there, when you are walking into the building you might find your closest friends in the senior area of the Mingledorff building. For freshmen, you may find people anywhere you go. Since freshmen do not yet have a spot where the majority of them stay, they find each other lingering around outside of Mingledorff, most commonly in the way of others. No 9th grader yet has their license to drive, so they do not normally walk into school with another person. This is different for sophomores and juniors because most of them are able to drive. These grades tend to meet up in the parking lot behind the field before they walk into school, so they do not have to walk in alone.
After your first three periods, everyone has advisory/assembly. Monday, Wednesday, and Friday are days that all four of the grades have assemblies. On Wednesdays, assembly takes up all of the time from 11-11:30. This is the day where our break period gets canceled out. On Mondays and Fridays though, assembly most commonly ends at around 11:20, leaving us with 10 minute breaks. Perfect time for everyone to get a quick snack at the Hornet Shop. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, most advisors spend around the first 15 minutes of break together. Although most advisories get let out around 11:15, the timing can differ extremely from different days and/or different teachers.
Throughout a school day, freshmen have two free periods. This is time given to the students by their teachers to work on extra homework. While it is not mandatory for a student to do work during their free, it is highly recommended! Although four days out of the eight day schedule kids do not get their second period to work on homework. These days kids have to go to Freshmen Foundations, a class tought to help students understand themselves and each other. Two out of four days that the freshmen class has Freshmen Foundations, they have weight room. This class helps students stay athletic and in-shape for their sports season or even to keep them a little bit athletic for future events. Since Freshmen Foundations is only for the freshmen class, Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors have up to three free periods to work on homework, but most commonly two.
For high school, lunch starts at 1:15. The fifth period class you have that day ends at 1:10 for lunch. Though some teachers will let you out a little bit early to get ahead of the very long incoming lunch line! Even getting let out five minutes early from the class you are in really makes a students day better, especially since lunch is so late and the students get extra hungry. Some days the students get lucky with having a free as their fifth period class that day. This means if you finish your work a little bit early, you might be able to get to lunch quicker than the rest of the kids! But, you should not get to lunch any sooner than 1:00, because the staff working in the lunch room needs a few minutes to prepare for the high schoolers coming in since the middle school gets let out right before. During lunch on some days of the week, club leaders also choose to meet. But most of the time, you are able to eat lunch while getting together with your club members.
The day is almost over! When the clock hits 3:25, students are let out of school. While some students are in a rush to get to their cars and head home, other students have sports. Depending on what sport you play, you have a little bit of time to hangout around the campus before you have to be ready. In most cases, you can make a quick run to the hornet shop to get a snack or a drink to be prepared for a couple of hours of hard work. In some instances, the sport that the student is participating in may have a game at around 4:30, causing you to have to leave school early. If you are ever in this situation, make sure to contact your teacher as soon as you find out. Teachers could get very angry if they find out on such short notice. Communicating with a teacher before the class starts also benefits you. If you ask politely, most teachers will give you a heads up on the classwork and you can get a headstart on it during a free or even at home.
